Basics of deinstitutionalisation and principles of community services

Základy deinstitucionalizace - kurz pro odborníky

The course will be especially useful if you are planning or implementing changes in a residential social service aimed at better adapting services to the personal needs of your clients and you need to prepare your work team for this. It does not necessarily have to be a transformation of a large institution, there is also room for change for the better in smaller residential institutions.

For whom the course is intended

The course is designed especially for social workers and social service workers, social service managers and possibly other professionals working in social services who want to understand the basics and broader context of deinstitutionalization and learn the principles of community support.

What you will take away from the course

The course will give you an understanding of the key principles, rationale and approaches to transforming care towards supporting people in the community. By completing the course you will gain:

  • An introduction to the history and understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of deinstitutionalization, including the key concepts of normalization and social role valorization.
  • An overview of the legislative framework and policies supporting deinstitutionalisation in the Czech Republic, the EU and at a broader international level.
  • An idea of the conditions and main stages of the process of transformation of care.
  • An idea of the barriers to deinstitutionalization and strategies for overcoming them.
  • An understanding of the key values of community support such as personalisation of support, engagement with natural supports and collaboration with public services and their relevance to working with service users.

In addition to the knowledge you will take away from the course, you will also get learning materials and links to other study materials.

Teaching content

  • The reasons and history of deinstitutionalisation and their implications for the functioning of services.
  • The right to independent living and the practical implications for the operation of services.
  • The process of transforming residential care to community-based support with specific examples including overcoming barriers and engaging self-advocates.
  • Principles of community support and a final summary with examples of transforming care and care coordination.

Scope and form of training, number of participants

The course is held in full-time form in the scope of 8 teaching hours in one day.

The maximum number of participants is 18.

The course is accredited by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic, accreditation No.: A2024/1629-SP/PC/VP/PP.

Participants who complete the course in full will receive a certificate of completion.
